Christina Maria
CHRISTINA MARIA was raised by wolves just outside of Vancouver, Canada. Leaving her wild & angry childhood behind, Christina put down her fists and picked up a guitar from a local pawn shop.
At 15, she began to compose music and later went on to attend College majoring in Jazz voice for 2 years, leaving before receiving her diploma. From here, Christina became a full time busker and also enrolled into part-time College for Drawing, Painting and Print.
With savings earned from busking, she left for Asia on a 4 1/2 month solo journey, receiving lessons in both India (Hindustani Vocals) and Bali (Gamelan Percussion). Equipped with her guitar, Christina composed her first album, and thus, “Stars & Satellites” was born. Along with the release of her debut album, Christina moved from Vancouver to Toronto.
In the summer of 2009, Christina gave up any kind of steady home to follow the recording for her second record, “Straight Line,” in which she collaborated with a number of notable producers living across Canada. Ryan Guldemond (Mother Mother) and Ryan Dahle (Limblifter, Hot Hot Heat) in Vancouver, in Calgary with Russell Broom (Jan Arden), David Baxter in Toronto and Stephan Ritch in Montreal.
“Straight Line,” was released in North America at the beginning of 2010, with various outstanding cross Canada tours following. All the while, Christina had her fingers dipped into other honey pots... Before the summer of 2010 had come to a close, Christina (now 24) had made her way to Europe, had already lived in Berlin for three months, completed a very successful tour of the Netherlands, and had signed a record deal with an independent record label in Switzerland. A Swiss version of, “Straight Line,” was released late October 2010 through Little Jig Records including three additional songs, all acoustic pieces recorded in Berlin and Toronto.
Christina has recently started to call a large farmhouse just outside of Zurich, Switzerland home, along with three legitimate clowns, three other musicians, two environmentalists and a carpenter. After a short break from the events of the past year, she has begun to compose her third album with sights toward another tour of Holland, Germany, Canada, and recording in Vancouver and Norway for the new year.
